Evaluating Websites

Techniques for determining the credibility and reliability of online information.

Anyone can publish on the web, so evaluation is critical.

Domain Names

  • .edu: Educational institutions (usually reliable).
  • .gov: Government entities (reliable data).
  • .org: Non-profits (can be good, but check for bias).
  • .com: Commercial (check for ads or sales motives).

Check the "About Us"

  • Who owns the site?
  • What is their mission?
  • Are they biased or trying to sell something?

Verify Content

  • Is there a date of last update?
  • Are there links to sourcs?
  • Can you verify the claims on other reputable sites?
