Paragraph Development

Writing cohesive body paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting evidence.

Effective paragraphs are the building blocks of a strong essay. They should be unified, coherent, and well-developed.

The PIE Method

A common structure for body paragraphs is the PIE method:

  • P - Point: state the main point of the paragraph (Topic Sentence).
  • I - Information: Provide evidence, data, or examples to support your point.
  • E - Explanation: Analyze the evidence and explain how it proves your point and connects back to the thesis.

Coherence and Transitions

Use transition words to show the relationship between ideas:

  • Addition: Furthermore, moreover, in addition.
  • Contrast: However, on the other hand, conversely.
  • Caes/Effect: Therefore, consequently, as a result.
